Bar Code Med Administration

Ballista Consulting's Project Manager led a large scale and highly complex Barcode Medication Administration (BCMA) implementation. This required construction of medication prep workspaces in individual patient rooms in a bustling regional level 1 trauma center and an academic medical center. The goal was to automate the “Five Rights” of medication administration verification through the use of Barcode technology: Right Patient, Right Medication, Right Dose, Right Route and Right Time.

As the only designated Level I adult and pediatric trauma and burn center in the State of Washington, and serving as the regional trauma and burn referral center, this implementation was far from typical given the perpetually heavy census. Our PM created an on-call facility/construction strike team ready for patient discharges hence making a room temporarily available for construction. Upon notification of a discharge, the team went into action overhauling the room as efficiently as possible to turn it back over for patient use.

Our Ballista Project Manager organized 24/7 support for the units during the deployment phases. Each project phase was completed on-time and budget. Everyone involved, including sponsors and leadership, considered this project a great success. All medical centers have now met regulations for federally mandated Meaningful Use point of care barcoding requirements and have measurably decreased the risk of improper medication administration.
